"A passion for justice is a natural outgrowth of our love of God and neighbor. When we love God fully, we love all God’s children as neighbor. Our spirit recognizes each child of God as part of the true community we share in Christ, and we want for each the same wholeness of life that we want for ourselves."

-Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

IMG_0038Jesus came preaching the good news to people.  But while he preached that salvation has come to the world, he also healed people. He provided food to crowd of thousands.  He healed the paralyzed, and the blind and even raised people from the grips of death.  Jesus also confronted the ways that the leaders in society found ways to oppress and exclude .

Because Jesus preached the good news, because Jesus was the good news, we are called to work for justice and look for a day when hunger, poverty and exclusion are defeated by God's justice.

As Christians, we are called to be agents of peace, following Jesus footsteps.  We are called to preach the good news, to preach Jesus in our words, and in our deeds.

At First, we are engaged in mission not because it is a nice thing to do.  We join in mission to follow what Christ did on earth and what God calls each one of us to do: to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God.

“To be a faithful, growing church, that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice.”

IMG_0033Church doesn't just happen in a church building. We work to make a difference in our communities. We collect for food pantries, shelter the homeless and care for children. In the past we volunteered with a tutoring program which is in conjunction with East Metro Women’s Center. (EMWC is an agency that provides programs and services to meet the physical and emotional needs of women and children who are homeless or in need of hope.) Starting in the 1970s, we welcomed refugees from Southeast Asia as they escaped the spectre of war in their homelands.

Today, we are working to establish new mission opportunities with partners like Feed My Starving Children and Hope for the Journey Family Shelter.  At First, we believe in "Getting Dirty for Jesus."
